It's Alive!
Last night my dad and I drained the 12 year old gas . . . cleaned the fuel petcock valve and put new fuel line on it. We got it all back together and then I decided to go for broke . . . I found my original start button wire (the button is missing since the replacement part I had didn't have electric start button). I cranked it and it lit off -- and jumped to about 5000 rpm . . . at 10:30 through that admittedly unbaffled two into one header . . . it's a bit loud. The throttle cables were a bit bound up under the gas tank so I got them unstuck and then it worked just fine. I'm very excited to get it on the road now. Called about insurance today on it, so that'll be in place.

It’s almost six years since you posted this. How’s your motorcycle so far? Twelve years is definitely a long life for a motorcycle, but it’s not impossible. Properly maintaining it can keep its lifespan long. I also read that it depends on the engine: the bigger the engine, the longer it will last. Anyway, I hope it’s still in good condition.
